Introduction
Human research is important because it helps medical professionals and the government
to identify risks in a certain population. After identifying risks associated with a certain
population, it becomes easy for pharmaceuticals, hospitals, and government agencies to plan the
necessary initiatives to minimize identified risks. Since human research is conducted with people
as its subjects, it is associated with risks and a higher possibility of violation. In the 1900s,
before human research was regulated, cases of human rights violations and neglect were
common. This brought the need for a board that could oversee research projects involving human
beings. Following the need, Institutional Review Board (IRB) was developed to ensure that all
human research meet the standards and act according to Federal regulations (Lapid, Clarke, &
Wright, 2019). IRB has various responsibilities and priorities when overseeing activities of
research institutions.
Primary responsibilities and priorities of the IRB
The primary responsibility of IRB is to review human research projects funded by the
federal government to make sure that they meet standards. Today, IRB can review projects of
human research that are not federally funded to make sure that all institutions follow the set
