The role of gender in society has
become one of the most studied and talked about subjects of the
recent decade. The transition from the gender trends of the 1950's
to the progress of today, gender roles have evolved into
something completely unique. In the early days, it was fairly
clear. Most women were at home with the children while the men were
working their suit and tie, nine-to-five boring jobs. The pursuit
of the American Dream was on everybody's mind and wholesome living
was the order of the day. These values were portrayed on television
on shows like Bewitched and before that, the Donna Reed show.
Here were perfect families in a perfect house living perfect lives.
The irony was that nobody's life was perfect and there are always
complications that try to interfere with keeping that American
Dream alive. Both Donna Reed's character and Samantha on Bewitched
were independent, strong women ready to take on the world. They
set the tone for the transition in gender roles that was
later to follow. After researching the history of gender roles
in society I will discuss how they have changed over time and what
the current trends are. I will also cite instances where gender
influenced actions in the real world.
