Virtual Simulation (vSIM) Assignment Description: The purpose of this assignment is to assess your ability to apply the conceptual knowledge you have gained thus far in the course to a simulated clinical case scenario. For this assignment, you will be asked to follow the steps outlined below: A. Review the learning objectives for this assignment: • Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in light of essential knowledge and skills of nursing • Conduct assessments in an organized, systematic manner • Establish a therapeutic environment and alliance for engaging patients and their families • Document nursing assessment activities in a concise, descriptive, and legally appropriate manner • Provide a safe environment for both patients and staff while maintaining patient privacy • Apply principles of infection control, including demonstrating hand washing and appropriate use of personal protective equipment • Use therapeutic communication techniques in a manner that illustrates caring for the patient’s overall well-being and reflects cultural awareness and psychosocial needs • Demonstrate a process of critical thinking when conducting an assessment and interpreting data • Make clinical judgments and decisions using evidence-based practice • Perform a focused cognitive neurological assessment • Recognize normal versus abnormal cognitive neurological assessment findings • Demonstrate use of the Glasgow Coma Scale • Provide patient education on fall risk B. Go to the Walters Kluwer web site titled the Point and complete the assignment; click here to access. • Create an account using the unique Access Code provided to you by the nursing program. Click on New User from the right-hand side menu (green button); enter the 12-digit code; create a user ID and password. • From the Home menu, select the tab “vSim for Nursing | Health Assessment” • Select “vSim Scenarios” • Go to ”Health Assessment Case 9: Edith Jacobson” and click on the tab The menu will display a sequenced numerical workflow as a suggested learning path. You will complete steps 2, 3, and 4 only. Skip Step 1 Suggested Readings and go to the next step C. Complete the Pre-Simulation Quiz. D. Complete the SIM by clicking on “Launch SIM” E. Complete the Post-Simulation Quiz. Note you must earn a minimum of 80% on the post-simulation quiz. Therefore, you may need to re-take the quiz to achieve the minimum required grade. Important: you must take a print-screen shot of your final score and submit it under the Module 12 tab of your Canvas course shell (vSIM assignment) Skip Steps 5 and 6 F. In a Word processing document, answer the questions listed below and submit (along with your post-quiz score to the vSIM assignment tab under Module 12 on Canvas): • • • • • • • Q-1: What safety measures did you take as part of your care for Edith Jacobson? Consider all aspects of patient safety, both universal (i.e., hand-washing) and patient-specific (i.e., stemming from the disease process), and provide a rationale. Q-2: Describe the nature of your communication with the patient as well as the inter-disciplinary team (IDT). Specifically, what therapeutic communication techniques did you utilize when interacting with Ms. Jacobson? What did you include in your SBAR report to the IDT members? Q-3: Describe the focused assessment you completed (health history and physical exam) and provide a rationale for your decisions. List each of the body systems you chose to assess and provide a rationale for your decision. List any body systems you chose to exclude and provide a rationale for your decision. Q-4: Write a clinical note describing the anticipated and unanticipated assessment findings you noted for each of the body systems above. Be detailed and specific in your descriptions. Q-5: List three top nursing problems you identified for Mrs. Jacobson and rank those in order of priority (refer to your Ackley’s textbook for an accurately stated nursing problems) Q-6: For each of the above noted nursing problems, list the top three interventions you took to address Mrs. Jacobson’s needs and provide a brief rationale. Physician orders, medications, and laboratory orders should also be included, as appropriate. Q-7: Briefly describe your response to the simulation experience. What did you do well? What would you do differently the next time and why? What, if anything, did you like about this assignment and why?
