George Washington’s Farewell Address
Before George Washington retired to his home in Mount Vernon, he gave a
heartwarming farewell address that he hoped would direct the country to better years ahead.
George Washington was the first president of the United States, and he felt that it was his
responsibility to offer some advice to his friends, the American citizens, about the factors they
would have to consider before they elected his replacement (Washington & Field, 2010). In
American history, the address is regarded as one of the most important documents, probably
because of the sincerity that oozed out of the speech.
His main agenda in the speech was to assure the American population that he would
continue to support the leadership of the country. He made it known that he would continue to
support Americans, the same way that they had supported him in his term as president
(Washington & Field, 2010). He wanted to assure the citizens who were fearful of letting him
retire that they were capable of electing another equally capable presi...
