A few years ago, before the implementation of EHR systems, doctors, nurses, and other
healthcare professionals had to write by hand in a paper, all their observations regarding the
health condition of the patient. Besides the problems generated by the loss of pages, and even the
destruction of an archive because of a natural disaster or an accident, reading doctors’
handwriting was a challenge. Drugs with similar names confused both drugstores’ employees and
nurses, who could not read what the doctor indicated. If a doctor referred a patient to a specialist,
then the file with all the pages written across the lifespan of the patient had to go the specialist
consult, so the new doctor could read what happened with the patient, search in different pages
which prescriptions used, and design a possible treatment. Moreover, if the patient wanted to
have a copy of his medical records, he would receive a photocopied version of the file. The
