PHI130 Coronavirus Discussion Board Assignment Just in a matter of weeks, the novel coronavirus has drastically changed our lives. From our daily face-to-face interactions to the imposition of strict government regulations, COVID-19 has impacted the way we carry ourselves in this world. With this change arises new questions about what we owe each other, what ethical duties we have, and how we should act morally in uncertain circumstances. Part I: Your first task is to choose three of the following questions and provide a response to them. A response consists of an argument for why you chose the particular answer you did. I want you to support your decision with reasons. Note: I am not looking for your opinion on the matter. Part II: Your second task is to critically engage with three responses of your classmates on the discussion board. You are to choose three different responses and reply with your reasons for why you think their arguments are on the right track or headed in the other direction. Format, Grading and Submission: The assignment is worth 20% of your overall grade. All answers to the questions and responses to your classmates’ answers will be done online in blackboard through the discussion board. Due Date: You must submit all your answers and replies by April 18th on the discussion board by 11:59 pm. My suggestion to you is to do the assignment in stages. That is, produce one answer and one reply a week. This way, you have the opportunity to reply to other students’ responses and you provide students with a chance to reply to yours. The following is a list of questions you may choose from. Choose three of the following: A. In Italy, the healthcare system is facing ample pressure to meet the demands of its patients. Simply put, the demand for healthcare exceeds the supply. There are not enough hospital beds to attend to all patients given the influx of patients tested positive for COVID-19. Suppose you are a medical practitioner in Italy, and you have to make the difficult decision of deciding between which of two patients you must give a hospital bed to. The first patient, Mario, is a male in his 70s. He has been in the hospital’s care for about a week and his symptoms appear to be the same since his initial entry. Another patient, Tony, is a male in his 20s and he currently has no bed but has been admitted into the hospital. As a doctor, you are faced with the difficult decision of deciding whether to keep treating the male in his 70s or remove him from the hospital bed and begin treating the male in his 20s. As a doctor, what should you do and why? B. Your sibling is a healthcare worker at your local hospital. She works on the frontline and she experiences the stress the novel coronavirus places on the healthcare system. The virus keeps spreading from admitted patients to other patients and healthcare workers. In conversation with your sister, she tells you that she is conflicted. On the one hand, in her capacity as a healthcare worker, she has an obligation to provide medical support for those in need. On the other hand, she has her own interests to look after. She has her own family and does not want to get sick or transmit the virus to her children. Moments into the conversation, your sister receives a call from the hospital asking her to work a shift. What advice do you give your sister and what is her ethical obligation in this scenario? Why? C. Researchers at the University of Miami have found a vaccine for COVID-19. However, this vaccine is extremely expensive and the rate at which they are produced is slow. It will be months before the vaccine becomes virtually accessible to all. Given the expense and limited supply of the vaccines, who should be receiving them first? There are three interest groups that you must decide between, but you can only choose one: patients in critical condition, healthcare workers, or those who can afford the vaccines. Only the group that receives the vaccine will go on to live and a large number of people from the remaining two groups will sadly pass away. Which group should you give the vaccines to and why? D. Your government has declared a state of emergency. All stores, shops, bars are closed until further notice and you are advised to stay at home and practice social distancing. The only stores that are open are essential stores like groceries. Ten days have past since the government declared the state of emergency and you’ve only gone out once to grab toilet paper. At home, you decide to check up on your friend and catch up via FaceTime. She tells you about her mental health condition and how social distancing has taken a toll on her. She’s contemplating whether to disregard the government advisory and go out to the beach to take care of her mental wellbeing. She asks you for advice on the matter. What is your advice and why? E. You are single parent with two children, Myles (5) and Wilma (4). You work at the University of Miami in an administrative role for the Psychology Department. Such job tasks include emailing prospective and current students, processing admissions files, course timetabling, etc. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, your employers have instructed you to work from home. Your children’s school have also closed for the remainder of the semester and you cannot afford to place your children in some other person’s care. One morning you wake up and your kids are restless. They want to go to the park and are tired of being confined to the apartment. You are also aware that there is a deadline today for processing admissions files. You won’t have enough time to go to the park and process the files. You are also aware that people in your department are being laid off. You think to yourself: “my children are restless, and I don’t blame them, but my government is advising me to stay at home. And my employer has a deadline today and I am also aware that they are laying people off. I can only take one course of action: either take my kids out or process the files for the deadline.” What should you do and why? F. You are a flight attendant with American Airlines. The COVID-19 outbreak has restricted and banned all non-essential travel. The only travel taking place is travel back to one’s home country. There are also pre-cautions being taken to ensure that passengers are healthy and not infected with the coronavirus. Such pre-cautions include: initial screening and testing of health before boarding, asking passengers where they are arriving from, and asking additional questions about them being in contact with others who may have been infected. All this has taken place and you join the cabin crew inside the plane to help and prepare passengers take off for landing. Multiple passengers quietly point out to you that one person on the plane keeps coughing and seems to show symptoms of the novel coronavirus. You do not witness the passenger coughing yourself and you are no medical practitioner. Other passengers come up to you to tell you that they don’t feel safe with that passenger on board. You are aware that all passengers are on board because they passed the initial screening and questioning, but you are also aware that passengers are pointing out that one person is coughing even though you have not witnessed this yourself. What should be your next course of action and why?

A.
Due to the latest surveys on COVID-19, the disease has a higher incidence and prevalence in
older adults. The main challenge in the face of the pandemic is to accept social distancing as a
security requirement for maintaining health. Social distancing puts at risk the person who may
suffer from depression, frustration, anxiety, violent attitudes, and even suicidal ideas. For this
reason, I consider that the person who needs the most assistance would be the man in his 70s, so
he would not remove his bed.
As we age, the immune system becomes less effective in the following ways. The immune
system loses the ability to distinguish its own from its foreign (that is, to detect foreign antigens).
Also, there are fewer white blood cells (leukocytes) capable of responding to new antigens.
Therefore, when the body of the elderly finds a new antigen, it has less ability to remember it and
to defend itself from its attack.
Although the amount of antibody that is produced in response to an antigen remains the same,
the antibodies lose the ability to attack the antigen. This change partly explains why pneumonia
and the flu are more common in older age and end in death more frequently. These changes also
partly explain why vaccines are less effective in later life. These changes in immune activity
make older people more sensitive to getting some types of cancer and infections. So, he would
leave the 70-year-old man in bed.
B.
Even though I understand her posture and that she is scared. I would suggest her to continue
going, because not only people will be needing her help but also doctors and companions that
require her presence to certain procedures. For this reason, a doctor must dedicate to provide
competent medical service, with full professional and moral independence, with compassion and
respect for human dignity.
A doctor must remember the obligation to respect human life and thinking about not wanting to
do it would be like avoiding it, since these people depend heavily on it to get well. As previously
mentioned, it is also in your hands to offer a competent and competitive service. By refusing to
provide her services, she would be disobeying her own principles.
In addition to that, if her concern is her children, she should think about looking for how to clean
and protect herself and her loved ones from contagion. Of the measures against the coronavirus,
the following would decrease the contagion: The use of soap, which is the greatest enemy of the
Coronavirus, is one of the best hygiene habits to prevent it.
On the other hand, the use of masks is recommended in any situation. Since this COVID-19 is a
type of virus that stays floating in the air, it can enter our body through the mouth. It is even
more essential the use of masks when traveling on public transport. As this is a closed
environment with little ventilation, where airborne transmission of this and other types of viruses
are easier to pass to other people, it is necessary the use of masks.
Similarly, the use of latex gloves is always highly recommended, especially since they help
reduce the number of times we touch our faces and, therefore, the probability of contagion. On
the other hand, since the Coronavirus is us...
