Description

Please follow instructions and the rubric. The professor I have chosen is "Veteran Service Officer".

For "My PA Profession"

- Start with an introductory paragraph

  1. Describe the particulars of your chosen position. Where did you find the position announcement? (citation needed!) What is the position, what skills are outlined as necessary? Can you determine who you will work for (by title or department, not necessarily name) Can you determine the pay range? What is the location for the position? when would you have to apply? (You need to choose a position that has an announcement open - so if you want to be Orlando city Administrator, it's not open! but you can choose a position like it and use if for the assignment).
  2. A few titles you might search for: budget analyst, policy analyst, city manager, emergency management, urban and regional planning, procurement specialist, public relations, Human Resources specialist; make sure it is a public sector position. (This might be an entry level position or it may be a position you desire later down the road. Your plan will need to plan how to get there, whatever kind of position it is.)
  • Here are some websites you might search to find a position:
  1. Why did this position appeal to you? Be specific!
  2. How might what you are studying apply to this position? (not just in this class, but all classes). Explain at least two examples besides our class.
  3. How might your extra-curricular activities, now or in the past, apply to this position? What skills did you develop that you perhaps hadn't thought of as "skills". Explain at least two examples. Extracurricular activities are things like band, student government, Latin Club, church youth group, theater, etc.
  4. How might a life experience - outside of classes or extra-curricular activities- apply to this position? Explain at least one example.

6. We discussed honor and a code of ethics. Develop a five-point code of ethics for yourself should you obtain this position. In developing your standards, please integrate in your thinking the following: respect for citizens, protection of the public interest, access by all citizens, and our democratic values we cherish. Explain how your code of ethics supports these items.

7. Identify three stakeholders in your life. Who are they, why are they stakeholders? Might a stakeholder assist you with your development?

8. We discussed strategic planning. Using the Myers-Briggs, or the Strengthsfinder, discuss three potential strengths to build on to be successful in the position. Also discuss three potential weaknesses to fortify before obtaining the position. How might you work to improve those weaknesses? Include a chart something like the following to accompany the narrative:

Strength/WeaknessDescriptionWhy it might be a S/W for position?
Strength 1
Strength 2
Strength 3
Weakness 1
Weakness 2
Weakness 3

9. Identify three concrete steps to better prepare yourself before graduation, or just after graduation. Include a Table something like this to accompany the narrative:

Action #Description of ActionStep(s) to be takenDate Actions will be completed
Action 1
Action 2
Action 3

10. Develop a mission and vision statement for yourself. A mission statement is a statement that describes your intention in life and the added value you will bring to the community around you; usually including your values. Usually a couple sentences long. Here is an example:

As a UCF faculty I will strive to support all students in learning, professional development, and making their way through their college years and beyond. I will do this with enthusiasm, humility, and timeliness.

A Vision statement is a bit different. It paints a picture of your future - if you achieve your goals - what will your future look like? Here is an example:

If I achieve my mission, in five years, I will be known as a faculty students can count on, desire to take class from and come back after graduation to tell me their success.

- then use a real concluding paragraph to the essay

Grading:

  1. Were all the elements above addressed?
  2. Quality of the material submitted. It is expected to be thoughtful.

Veterans Service Officer Paper
The particular job that I have chosen for this paper is the occupation of Veterans Service
Officer. This job is a position that strives to assist veterans and their families when it comes to
the many benefits that come from serving in the military. This job is a government job and
typically Veterans are the ones that hold this position, although it is not a requirement for all
states. When researching this job online, I found a job posting from two weeks ago. The position
was announced on a popular job search site called ‘Jobs Unique’. On this job posting, the skills
outlined for this position include overall knowledge of veteran affairs, supervising ability,
excellent communication with coworkers, and etc.
This particular position is located in Wildwood, Florida and has some specific
requirements for experience. Although not all states are as strict, in Florida, Veterans Service
Officers must have experience in the military or have married an individual who served, “Florida
Statutes Section 292.11 requires, at a minimum, that this position be filled by a veteran who
served as a member of the Armed Forces of the United States during a period of war, as defined
in Title 38, USC; who served at least 18 months of active duty; and who was separated from such
service under honorable conditions, or the surviving spouse of such a veteran” (2019). For this
job posting, it does say urgent, but there is no specified closing data for applications or
interviews. The pay range is also not specified. There is no distinction within the job posting,
more research would have to be made. This position would be under the direct supervision of the
Manager of the Veterans Service Office.
Interest in Position
I chose this job because it is interesting to me. I have been around veterans and active
duty members my entire life. I have seen them personally struggle trying to get understand and

use the benefits that they have already earned. One of the memories that sticks with me of my
childhood is seeing my mothers best friend stressed out with her kids. Her husband had just
passed away and although she knew the government and military was going to be giving her
money and resources, she could not figure it out on her own. She was also too afraid...
