MANAGING A HOTEL BUSINESS

Introduction
Starting a hotel business is a challenging but potentially profitable undertaking. It is
important to ensure the hotel stands out from the rest because competition is often rife. For this
reason, one must carry out extensive market research to establish whatever amenities and
services other hotels do not have, and then endeavor to fulfill customers' needs and expectations
(Markou, & Bannister, 2008). In addition, the entrepreneur must choose the location carefully,
devise a winning strategy and business plan, and have access to considerable financial resources.
However, one must do this with the customer in mind because the hotel industry falls under
services business sector. In essence, the hotel must be different from what the competitors’ offer,
which implies that organizational skills are paramount.
Selecting the Hotel Brand
One of the first decisions about hotel management can have significant implications.
Therefore, one must consider whether to brand the hotel or not. Evidently, the brand of the hotel
will be an important defining point of the value, image, and profitability. In the real sense, no
other decision has a greater effect on the hotel's future than the brand. In addition, the
management of the hotel can decide to enhance the brand's value, protect the proprietor or detract
from the hotel's value. I appreciate that many voices to this important decision exist. Arguably,
financial institutions might be comfortable when a hotel is fully branded. They may also be of
the opinion that a brand manager can manage the hotel more profitably. Similarly, some
investors might be predisposed to one brand over the other. They may also have preconceptions
of the hotel's owners having the capacity to manage the hotel. Consequently, it is critical to
consider the pros and cons of brands and their management.
The hotel will operate as a franchise because of the numerous benefits that brands have.
