Write a paper that discusses a recent crisis in the news and how it was handled from a PR standpoint (e.g. BP oil spill). How would you have handled the situation as a PR expert and why? What tactics and techniques would you have used and why?

The requirements below must be met for your paper to be accepted and graded:

  • Write between 750 – 1,250 words (approximately 3 – 5 pages) using Microsoft Word in APA style, see example below.
  • Use font size 12 and 1” margins.
  • Include cover page and reference page.
  • At least 80% of your paper must be original content/writing.
  • No more than 20% of your content/information may come from references.
  • Use at least three references from outside the course material, one reference must be from EBSCOhost. Text book, lectures, and other materials in the course may be used, but are not counted toward the three reference requirement.
  • Cite all reference material (data, dates, graphs, quotes, paraphrased words, values, etc.) in the paper and list on a reference page in APA style.

References must come from sources such as, scholarly journals found in EBSCOhost, CNN, online newspapers such as, The Wall Street Journal, government websites, etc. Sources such as, Wikis, Yahoo Answers, eHow, blogs, etc. are not acceptable for academic writing.

Every crisis in the organization happens to bring a negative reputation to the image of the
organization. In many cases it happens that the public relation of a company is in doubt while the
picture is tainted due to cases of crisis that might actually go out of control (Hendricks and
Hendricks, 2014). It is good to have a crisis management plan that will help in solving the issue
at hand at any given time. It is good to give a solution or find the control for the situation before
it actually goes out of hand which will mean that it will have created more damage.
In the event of a crisis in the organization, the crisis control management needs to
communicate immediately with the stakeholders and the employees. The stakeholders will
always need information, the neighbors as well as regulators and the media. The information
should be a prompt response, accurate and during the happening of the crisis. The crisis control
management must ensure that the public perception on the company remains intact. The
information given to each group should be according to their interest, the effect to such
audiences and the available channels.
