CSCI 415 TERM PAPER TOPICS SELECTION – Spring 2020 Due Monday, February 3, 2020 (11:59pm) Please select your top three ethics topics (in order of preference) from the list below and email your choices to me by Monday, February 3, 2020. I will compile a list by name of your selected topics to reduce the number of duplicate topic areas. You will only be assigned one topic but I want your top three to make putting together the list easier. If there is another topic that you think would fit into the class that you are interested in, go ahead and submit that too. I'm interested in expanding this list. Paper Requirements: Required topic headings for your paper should include the background surrounding the issue, a historical perspective, current issues that are applicable, legislation dealing with this topic, examples, global dynamics/impact (such as issues, processes, trends, and systems), personal impact from a global perspective, and a summary. These are the topics to be discussed in the term paper Each paper should contain a reference list of at least five (5) different substantial and quality references. The references and reference citations for the term paper must be to a current event less than 3 years old (a reference with no date (n.d.) is not acceptable). This requires a reference citation in the text of the paper and a reference at the end of the paper to which the reference citation applies. You must include some information obtained from the reference in your answer. The references must be found on the internet and you must include a URL in your reference so that the reference can be verified. You cannot use information from the text book or any book/article by the author of the text book as a current event. Make sure that your reference has a date of publication. The body of the paper should be a minimum of six typed double spaced pages. Your cover page and reference page cannot be counted in this number. You should use the APA format for your reference citations and the reference page. Introduction: The internet
With more people incorporating the internet in their loves from the society, economy
and private lives, the government involvement in the internet are set to increase. The internet
has its roots dated back in the 1970s, where it originated as a section of an Advanced
Research Projects Agency (ARPA). The internet has grown to where it is now because of the
United States government. Others nations have soon joined this network that has seen it grow
and being applied in various fields. What is the internet? The internet comes from two words
inter and network thus insinuating that it is an interconnection of networks. The internet is a
wide area network which covers the whole world. The internet is a combination of various
high bandwidth data lines which are connected through to some web servers and Internet
Service Providers. The internet originated from the original concept of packet switching, as
seen in ARPANET. It was made to bring to life the idea of having various independent
networks to form one large entity, otherwise referred to as an open architecture network. This
idea was brought into light with Bob Kahn’s demonstration in 1972 as a presentation at the
Historical Perspective
Licklider first discussed the issue of a Galactic Network in that in his thoughts were a
way to link the whole world through a network. In this network that he envisioned, Licklider
wanted a network whereby data and programs could be accessed from any point of the world
at a fast rate. The first connection of computers was witnessed in the connection of TX-2 in
Mass to another computer in California through a landline. This was the first and smallest
wide area network. With this connection, they realized that computers could work together
and share data but not with this technology and hence realized the need of introducing packet
switching. The first plan for ARPANET was written and later published in 1967 by Roberts

and went to present it at DARPA, where he met Donald and Roger, who had the concept of
packet networks. The group had a written plan of how the packet switching would work. In
the following years, the evolution occurred to the extent that ARPANET was built and more
computers were connected to it. Through this, the first mail was sent in March when Ray
Tomlinson wrote the first electronic mail through the ‘hot’ application. This made electronic
the greatest technological advancement for more than ten years.
Current Issues Affecting the Internet
The use of internet technology has increased governments participation in the
management of the internet. This is caused by the fact that more people are moving different
aspects of their life from socializing, schooling, entertainment and even work. This creates
the need for governments to control o...
