Question Description

Assignment 1

Research Project II

(15% of class grade)

Research Project II will consist of two smaller parts. Part I and Part II will be weighted equally, and each will be submitted separately in Canvas.

Part I (50 out of 100 points)

Assemble a dataset in Excel that is properly designed to do descriptive and causal analysis. You should identify the potential causal and outcome variables in your spreadsheet. The dataset should have at least 100 datapoints (rows). You can retrieve the data from any number of sources, perhaps most easily, online. You may use data from work, but only if that data is information that you can share without causing a problem with your employer. I’m not concerned if the data is business oriented. That is, you can examine sports data, entertainment data, hobbies, etc. However, even those areas have “sales” numbers and other business metrics, so it would not be hard to add a business variable. With the dataset you assemble, do the following:

  • At the bottom of the dataset, you should provide the basic statistics for “typical values” and “dispersion” (mean, median, standard deviation, etc.) using excel functions.
  • On the right of the columns (variables), provide the output for a multiple regression of the data. One analysis is all that is required. State briefly in the Excel spreadsheet if there is evidence of a significant relationship(s) and why?If you do not show significance, that is fine. Simply explain the results.
  • At the bottom of the spreadsheet, be sure to include the source for the data (website location, etc.)
  • There is no write-up for Part I. You only have the written response that is required for the regression results in the Excel spreadsheet. So, most of the time that will you spend on Part I will likely be in finding the data and organizing the data into columns. I’m not going to dictate how you find the dataset, but in terms of learning, I hope you will find and assemble the spreadsheet on your own. You could easily have data from multiple sources, and if so, you will need to match the data by row to fit with the variables in the spreadsheet. You may help each other or ask me questions.
  • Your grade in Part I will be based on completion of the tasks and the neatness of your dataset.

Part II (50 out of 100 points)

I want you to review three analyses techniques: (1) Conjoint Analysis, (2) Cluster Analysis, and (3) Multiple Regression. In no more than 1-2 pages total (single space, 12 pt., times roman font), write about an example of good use for each these analyses relative to your job or an area of interest. You can also pull from your Project I research area in these examples. You are going to see plenty of examples of each analysis online, so you should be able to apply those examples to complete this assignment. Both your content and writing quality will used to determine your grade for Part II.
