DIVERSITY
Book 1:
Author: Queen Rania of Jordan Al Abdullah. Title: The Sandwich Swap.
Summary of the text: The book narrates of Rania’s experience in nursery school. The main
characters are Lily and Salma, who are best friends and always do all activities together. They
develop a feud over food over food, which becomes known all over their school. Salma thinks
that Lily’s sandwich made of peanut butter and jelly looked strange and gross. On the other hand,
Lilly thinks Salma’s sandwiches made of hummus and pita are weird and gross. They had kept
their opinions to themselves for a while, but after telling the truth, they become angry with each
other (Al Abdullah, 2010). They become ashamed of their actions after the issue goes around in
school. Finally, they decide to taste each other’s sandwich, and each loves the taste of the
sandwich. They become friends again and understand each other’s choices.

Examine the illustrations:
The illustrations used are fascinating. The illustrator, Tricia Tusa, starts the narration with an
image of a sandwich. Throughout the 32 page book, Tricia focuses on Lily and Salma each at a
time. To emphasize the theme, on the last page, there is a picture of Lily and Salma waving
situated in a table among their classmates where there are different types of food from various
regions in the world.
