Description

Option #1: Tool Testing Report

To respond to various computer security breaches and perform a proper forensics investigation, it is important to ensure that tried and true tools and software are utilized. Tool testing provides a confirmation that the tool or software that you are using to perform a forensic investigation is performing the actions that you intend and nothing more.

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) (Links to an external site.) has a rigorous testing program for computer forensic tools and equipment.

  3. Describe the significance and importance of the various computer forensic offerings from NIST.
  4. Visit https://www.nist.gov/itl/ssd/digital-forensics (Links to an external site.) for additional information.

Computer Forensics Tool Testing (CFTT) role is to test software tools for
computer forensics and also generate comprehensive test tools, test criteria, test procedures, test
sets, and test hardware. The test results are used by the bodies responsible for tool-making to
improve the tools and based on this, and the clients use CFTT information to make choices on
the tools they can acquire for computer forensics. The data is also used by interested parties to
help them understand the use and abilities of the devices. Computer Forensics Tool Testing uses
approaches that are internationally recognized to test for conformance and quality of forensic
tools. For computer forensic tools to be used by the law enforcement team test of reliability and
quality must be verified. Therefore test criteria must be developed to test all the tools provided.
The National Institute of Justice created the project of CFTT in the USA in the
Department of Justice to develop methods of testing tools to be used in the same department. A
team is created from various departments in the department of justice to comment and give their
views on the drafts presented. This team is referred to as the steering committee. It comprises of
technical support representative, the FBI, DoD, NIST, NIJ, among others. One or a few
representatives are selected to come up with the steering committee (Sultan, & Salman, 2017). The
chosen agents are responsible for going through the drafts presented, select categories of tools to
be investigated, and also decide which tools shall be tested. The steering committee is chosen
strategically such that all departments involved are well represented. The reason why the
committee is only made up of the security-related department representatives is...
