EDITING ACTIVITY 5: PARTS OF SPEECH, VERBS, SUBJECT -VERB AGREEMENT, DEPENDENT CLAUSES, FANBOYS, COMMAS, RUN -ONS, FRAGMENTS, GERUND & INFINITIVES, -ING PARTICIPLES This is body paragraphs 2 and 3, and conclusion of the previous essay. Make sure all of the words have the correct part of speech forms, the verbs have the correct tenses, the subjects and verbs agree with each other, the dependent clauses have correct grammar and punctuation, there are no run-ons or sentence fragments, and the gerunds and infinitives are correct. Another characteristics that makes Tom attractive is how he wishes to become someone who impress people with his dared actions in the face of danger. In the first part of this book, Tom decides to become a pirate who will be respecting for his formidableness, who “has his black flag unfurled, with the skull and crossbones on it, and [can] hear with swelling ecstasy the whisperings, ‘It's Tom Sawyer the Pirate! -- the Black Avenger of the Spanish Main! '” (31). In this scene, we can see him play out his fantasy of being a brave swashbuckler. Near the end of the story, he changed his mind and decides to become a noble robber. This idea is evident when Tom explains that “a robber is more high-toned than what a pirate is — as a general thing. In most countries they're awful high up in the nobility — dukes and such” (138). Along with the quick change in his opinion, his ideas are childish and innocent, that making the reader want to smile at his cuteness. A third characteristic that makes Tom attractive is how he is kind to women. Once, in the story, Tom saved his girlfriend, Becky Thatcher, by willingly getting punished for something that she had done. Becky accidentally ripped the teacher's book, and when the teacher asked the class to point out the culprit Tom courageously confessed that he was the one who did it. Tom was punished and took his whippings with a determined heart (77). Tom sacrificed himself as a gentleman to saved the honor of a lady. On another occasion, when he and his friends are talking about how they would act when they became pirates. Tom said that they would not harm the women, when he claimed that pirates “don't kill the women—they're too noble. And the women's always beautiful, too.'” (48). This is a very good point in him that shows a contrast between his kind heart and his rough, boyish thoughts, therefore making him attractive. A story can’t help being much more interested to read, if it has a colorful character that can captivate us, and at the same time, be authentic. Although Tom is a colorful character, who can be foolish and childish, but also courageous and noble, the reader hopes to know more about him, and as a result, Tom pulls us into the story. It is no exaggeration to say that this fact is the main reason why this book is so readable. If you enjoy read about complex, realistic characters, I advice finding a nice quiet place to savor this book.
