Part I

American Expeditionary Force (World War 1)
The American expeditionary force was the name given to the American soldiers who were
involved in the First World War in Europe. This troop was formed as a result of the request
given by General Pershing, following the U.S Congress declaration of war against Germany in
1917, needing a million men, with the possibility of growing the number to three million (Roark
et al, ch.22, 2017). The war took place in France at Cantigny and Chateau-Thierry and these
troops would prevent the German forces from advancing further. The war drove the Germans out
of France along the Marne River (Roark et al, ch.22, 2017). The assault against the Germans by
the Americans would further force Kaiser Wilhelm II into exile into Holland, and in November
1918, the German Republic was forced to meet with the French High Command to sign an
agreement that would bring the war to an end (Roark et al, ch.22, 2017).
Truman Doctrine
In 1947, the U.S. started implementing the doctrine of containment to guide foreign policy for
the next four decades. The policy was introduced to Congress by President Truman in March 12,
1947, during a joint session. During the speech, he declared financial aid to Greece and Turkey,
which emphasized on the dangers of not protecting democracy in Greece and Turkey. President
Truman insisted that the U.S would not only resist Soviet Union Military power but also support
free people who resisted attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures
(Roark et al, ch.26, 2017). The whole idea behind the doctrine was to control the growing
influence of the Soviet Union.
