Question Description

Columbus ran one time around the perimeter of a rectangular field that measures 40 feet by 70 feet. Pythagoras ran from one corner to the opposite corner and back. How much farther did one of them run? Express your answer to the nearest whole number.

Tutor Answer

School: University of Virginia

Perimeter of the rectangle =2(40+70)=2*110=220 feet

Columbus covered 220 feet.

Pythagoras ran twice the diagonal = 2 *sqrt(40^2+70^2)= 2 *sqrt(6500)= 2*80.622=161.224 =approx 161 feet
