9th term is 38; 14th term is 63

14-9 is 5  is the difference in the number of terms

63-38 = 25 is the difference in the quantity of the terms

25/5 gives you the difference between each term in this case 5

so if 5 is the difference between each term then

5*9 is the difference between the first term and the ninth term = 40

38 (the 9th term) - 40 (the difference between 1st and 9th) gives you the 1st term = -2
