Overall Health
Each year, individuals all around the world tend to make a New Year’s resolution they do
not see through. People set goals such as; save more money, learn new skills, quit (insert
addiction), get organized, but rarely do we see individuals making it past the first couple months
of the new year. The most commonly chosen of these goals is perhaps one of the most important
for our daily lives, and we need to try our best to see that this goal does not end up like every
other New Year’s resolution. This is because this goal affects every aspect of our livelihood.
That goal is exercise. The body, as a whole, benefits greatly from physical exertion; exerting
muscles to maintain fitness. Exercise is critical to maintaining the highest efficiency of body
systems functions because it, directly and indirectly, improves one's mental state and one's
physical being.
Exercise is considered crucial for enhancing our overall cognitive function. One of the
benefits of exercising is its ability to reduce stress. According to the American Heart
Association, our body reacts to stress by “releasing a hormone, adrenaline, that temporarily
causes your breathing and heart rate to speed up and your blood pressure to rise” (American
Heart Association, 2017). These physical reactions activate the "fight or flight" response, which
makes the body stay in high gear on and off for long periods at a time when stress is chronic.
This can lead to a weak immune system and cause headaches and stomach problems. Because of
these health problems, the body needs a way of combating this to maintain a healthy internal
environment, and that is where exercise comes into play. Exercising helps increase the
production of the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins (Mayo Clinic Staff,
2018). These endorphins function like analgesics and sedatives, and “interact with the receptors
in [our] brain that reduce [our] perception of pain” (Bhandari, 2020). It impermanently alleviates

stress by helping us get our minds off of our worries. Furthermore, exercise helps with lowering
rates of depression.
Depression stops the brain from adapting to new situations by “limiting the ability of
brain chemicals called neurotransmitters to foster communication throughout the brain”
(McMillen, 2012). Depression puts the brain in non-stop self-hate and takes away the brain’s
flexibility to get out of that negative loophole. Exercise reverses the negative effects of
depression by increasing the production of BDNF or brain-developed neurotrophic factor; this
protein “helps neurotransmitters perform their functions, which may help depressed people
emerge from their rut” (Ratey & Haggerman, 2013). A study conducted by researchers at the
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2005 shows that “30 minutes of moderately
intense exercise five days a week reduced symptoms of depression by nearly half after 12
weeks” (McMillen, 2012).
Other benefits of exercising are the promotion of positive thinking and improved selfconfidence. Having low self-esteem is not uncommon to many children, adolescents, and adults,
