A researcher named Aleksander Kogan made a personality quiz application, which was
very similar to the Psychometrics Centre of Cambridge University where Kogan worked,
for Facebook. Approximately 270,000 people downloaded Kogan’s application on their
Facebook account. Kogan was then able to access information about the users and their
friends. Kogan’s application saved the harvested data into a private database instead of
immediately deleting it. Kogan then gave this private database, which has data about 50
million Facebook users, to the voter-profiling company Cambridge Analytica. The
