PEER (AGNES AVENDZI) What is your role as a healthcare team member? 1. My role as a healthcare team member is a Trauma Nurse. How do you define professionalism and how does professional responsibility influence your work? 2. Professionalism as I define it is the attitude and behaviors of a person. Commitment, confidence, responsibility, and honesty are some characteristics of professionalism. It also applies to the workplace’s environment. As a nurse, my main and prioritized responsibility is providing my patients quality care. As their advocate, I have to stand up for them. Do you consider leaders in your organization stewards of health care? Why or Why not? 3. Yes. The leaders in my organization show true stewardship. In a clinical workplace, stewardship is providing patients with the best care available. Not only do the leaders focus on the patients, but they are also advocating for other nurses. They show compassion. Is it important to you that leaders exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as well as power and influence when working with colleagues? Why or why not? 4. I think it is important because leaders should be able to show these in order to teach the team. Leaders are practically role models for everyone, so whatever they do should be shadowed. Leaders should not overdo their power. Leading is not all about controlling and bossing people around. Effective leaders are able to blend these two together. Authentic leaders are honest, which is good to see. The team trusts an authentic leader more. LEADERS (MELITZA GORDAN): What is your role as a healthcare team member? 1. I am the floor manager of a trauma unit. I have been a nurse for over 20 years. How do you define professionalism and how does professional responsibility influence your work?’ 2. Professionalism is making sure to stay ethical and not overstep rules provided. Being professional relates to how you present yourself behavior-wise and physically. Do you consider leaders in your organization stewards of health care? Why or Why not? 3. I am a steward of healthcare. As a manager, I have to organize and serve to the needs of other nurses and patients. I think all nurses are stewards, as they all attend to the needs of patients. Is it important to you that leaders exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as well as power and influence when working with colleagues? Why or why not? 4. Yes, it is important. Nurses should advocate for everyone, including patients and other nurses. Professional advocacy is very important as nurses are one of the best advocates. Authenticity is vital in a clinical workplace. As a leader, I have a lot of power, but power can mean many different things. I like to keep a healthy, professional workplace. Toxicity can affect work efficiency, which affects patient care quality. I have power, but I try not to overuse it. I want my colleagues to understand I am still one of them. When I do want to use my power, I use it to teach. I need to do the duties of a leader so that the team can shadow it. This makes them professionals. /
