Challenges and potential solutions to Big Data with Digital Forensics.
Forensics is the study of argumentative discourse.
Digital forensics is the applied study of the identification, collection, organization,
and analysis of evidence data. The integration of computer systems in the field of forensics.
The following activities occur;
•
Identification – the investigator identifies the events that could be useful in
obtaining information.
•
Collection – the investigator obtains information from digital devices such as
phones, computers, etc.
•
Organization – the data obtained is organized in specific structures according
to the nature of the data. Several methods to enhance the quality of the data such as
data filtering and sorting which are components of data reduction are done here.
•
Presentation – the organized data is then presented as a form of evidence
Big Data has the following characteristics.
•
Variety-The data is obtained from different sources such as phones, router,
computers, etc. The data obtained could be structured, semi-structured, or
unstructured.
•
Volume-Has a large volume; terabytes and petabytes of data that is handled.
•
Velocity- Different velocity since data is obtained from all types of sources it
could be real-time, batch
•
Veracity- Accuracy, and correctness of data which also includes data integrity
•
Value – the ability to turn the provided data into information that could be
used in decision making.

Big data in digital forensics which involves obtaining data from digital devices to
solve cases has proven to be an important asset in our daily lives especially in the legal
system of providing evidence to solve crimes. There is also the use of software such as
FRStat which is a software used to analyze the strength of fingerprint evidence by analyzing
the sample and comparing whether it is from a certain source and showing the likelihood that
it is from a similar source or a different source. Though they are faced with various
challenges some are technical challenges such as large data volume, data diversity, etc.,
operation challenges such as lack of qualified personnel, and also legal challenges like
jurisdiction and difficulty for digital forensic investigators to obtain licenses.
Forensic science has been relied upon by the justice system as a way of determining
whether someone committed a crime or not. Not all times the analysis by experts is correct or
even relevant since two or more different samples of evidence from different areas can be
considered to be a match, therefore, compromising the evidence that would have been used to
determine a person’s innocence. To avoid these circumstances measures such as obtaining
more information about the samples and also the occurrence of events. In other cases, the
individuals analyzing the data might b...
