I'm am teaching myself french using an app and it says both Tu es and Vous ĂȘtes are ways of saying you are but it doesn't clarify what the difference in them is,like when you use which one. Thank you so much for your time

So the difference is formal and non formal. So in English it is like the difference between saying you and thou like you read in scriptures or old documents. So when using tu you use it for people you know or little kids. When using vous you will use this when talking to older people or people you don't know.
