Neisseria gonorrhoeae Bacterial Infection
Introduction
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a type of bacteria that causes a sexually transmitted
genitourinary infection referred to as gonorrhea. This bacterium is oxidase positive as well as
aerobic and survives neutroplis. Neisseria gonorrhoeae can be transmitted to a healthy person
when they come into sexual contact with infected persons (Kim et al, 2019). Additionally, the
bacterium can be passed from an infected expectant mother to the baby when giving birth. This
bacterium can cause infection of the genital, eyes, and troat.
Sequence of Events after Infection
After successful transmission of Neisseria gonorrhoeae into the host organism, it attaches
itself onto the epithelial cell of the mucosal site that is infected. The type IV Pilli help the
bacterium to adhere to the epethalial membrane and interact with the proteins found on the
membrane. It later replicates forming microcolonies (Kim et al, 2019). The microcolonies
transcytose in the bloodstream spreading the pathogen to other parts of the body. During
colonization and growth of the bacterium, the host’s immune system is stimulated to release
phagocytic cells meant to fight these pathogens. The bacterium exhibits antigenic variation while
in host’s body making it difficult to be destroyed by the antibodies.
