Personal definition of ethics and what constitutes ethical and unethical act, how I
formulated the definitions and a description of core intrinsic values that I hold
My personal definition of ethics is that it is the moral principles that I perceive to be right
and which guide the decisions and actions that I take. Ethical acts are the behaviours or actions
that are consistent with the moral principles, standards and values of a person, society or an
organization. An unethical act is a behaviour that is against the moral principles and values of an
individual, society or an organization. I have formulated the definitions based on what I believe
about morality and what is right or wrong. I also formulated the definition based on some of the
essential values that I have. They include integrity which constitutes of faithfulness, commitment
and honesty, empathy, respect, justice and accountability.
The specifics of the situation
At some point in my life while working as a salesperson in a manufacturing company, I
encountered several ethical situations. At one point the costs of manufacturing products
decreased at higher rates. This caused the organization to make huge profits than before. During
this time some of the clients who are close friends to the boss of the company knew about the
reduced cost of manufacturing. They ended up requesting the boss for a sales discount.
The boss instructed me to reduce the prices of the products that I sold to his group of
friends who had requested for a discount. At a certain point, certain customers who are not
friends with the boss also asked for a discount, the boss declined their request and asked me to
