Description

Using APA format guidelines, write an 8 page research paper utilizing 8 to 10 sources. At least two of these sources should be scholarly. Your topic should be related to cancer or athlete injury (ex. women with breast cancer). In the face of adversity, one person can make a difference. What makes some people more resilient than others? You may chose to focus on the particular adversity and on either one person or a group of people.

You will need to provide an annotated bibliography for 8 of the sources( not included with the 8 pages) : a descriptive and evaluative paragraph that informs the reader of the accuracy, relevance and quality of the cited source. Annotations are usually about 5 to 7 sentences long. Annotations are more than summaries because they evaluate the worth of sources on the list. Students should assess the appropriateness of each source to their projects and should take into account the reliability, bias, clarity, timeliness, etc. of the source.

Example 1: Wes Moore (author of The Other Wes Moore) attributes his ability to persevere through the adversities he faced (poverty, single mother, etc.) to three factors which made him resilient. Those three factors he identified were expectation, education and environment. (If you were writing a research paper about Moore, you would provide information on his background including his adversities and then explain through research how he demonstrated resilience. You may choose to quote from his book, speeches, and interviews as well as what research you find on the importance of expectation and education.)

Example 2: In the face of adversity, one person can make a difference. Despite being born to a drug addicted mother, being placed in foster care which eventually led to adoption by her grandparents, Simone Biles not only overcame her adversity but she continues to excel as a world class gymnast. Her resilience was developed through faith, supportive family and strong ambition. (If you chose to write a research paper about Biles, you would first explain how she is with some basic biographical information located from research. Then you would proceed to explain the adversities she faced (research backed information about foster care and sexual abuse) as well as documentation as to how experts says faith, family and ambition help people cultivate resilience.)

Note: Each paragraph within the research paper (except possibly the introductory and concluding paragraphs) should contain at least one in-text or parenthetical citation. These entries must match an entry in your Works Cited or References page.

BREAST CANCER IN WOMEN
Adversity can be considered as a misfortune situation. People could be either born with
difficulties or acquire these misfortunes as they grow. Society shapes how people think. Some of
these adversities are believed to be a result of the breaking of taboos or curses. In the modern
world, these adversities occur due to the evolved lifestyle that everyone wants to live. Cancer, for
example, has been identified as one of the fatal diseases, and if one is diagnosed with cancer, the
person feels that he has no will to live.
Cancer is adversity that shutters all dreams, and it only requires a lot of confidence to get
up and move on. Moving on could be easier to say, but no one knows how women with breast
cancer handle the pain that they go through. The thought of getting away from their children
make these women more uncomfortable and tear (Chang, L. et al. 2019). Cancer is a fatal
disease, but that does not mean that women with breast cancer should lose hope that easily.
Cancer is a disease that results from the abnormal production of cells. These cells have
uncontrollable division and end up destroying healthy body tissues. The symptoms in cancer
result in discomfort and severe pain that everyone understands. There are situations in which
cancer adversity causes stigma. Stigma is a condition that several people undergo. Like it was
said before, our society models social constructivism. We build ideas and use these ideas to
criticize the unfortunate. Studies have shown that the suffering experienced by women with
breast cancer is unbearable (Dooley, L. N. et al. 2017). Breast cancer infection for women under
the age of 50 years has increased drastically. Many of the women fear the treatment method
because these treatments could result in infertility; hence they miss the opportunity of
childbearing.

Women with breast cancer have faced conflicts as they are battling with the disease.
Women with breast cancer have become paradoxical as they make decisions on childbearing.
The women have also instilled fear within them, leading to sinister emotions. How we handle
and perceive ideas concerning breast cancer is what results in the worsening of conditions.
Doctors have reported that many of the young women want to preserve their reproductive
capacity before they begin treatment. It is evident, and we could then feel what these women
experience. It looks like the pain does not come from the wounds and burns, but it is
psychological trauma (Chang, L. et al. 2019).
Since the World Health Organization has placed breast cancer as one of the global health
care problems, many have instilled fear within them. All that people know is that with cancer,
death follows. Sometimes people need to understand that even with the most dangerous disease
like breast cancer, women can survive. They could take their everyday routines and walk to their
workplaces. The only problem that has arisen is fear. The fear that is talked about here is a
complex term. It is not only the fear of death but includes the fear of stigma, emotional despair,
and psychological terror (Chang, L. et al.2019). The reports from researchers have it that breast
cancer is the second worst type of cancer in women. The treatment plan causes increased anxiety
and stress.
Many people lose hope even before the treatment plan begins, and this is where we go
wrong. We may feel bad for breast cancer patients because of the side effects induced by the
treatment options. People have to remember that long-term treatment has led to the prevention of
women to carry out their social roles. Everything does not work right for breast cancer women,
which means they need the support from the family and the community. It does not matter what

BREAST CANCER IN WOMEN

kind of support we can provide for breast cancer women; all we need to do is to support them
emotionally and encourage them that they have the purpose of living (Li, Y. et al. 2018).
We believe that when women are experiencing this type of adversity, they can make a
difference and help others in society. The plight of a woman is essential in the community, and
this is what we want to know how women with breast cancer can bring a difference in our lives.
Women's empowerment is a critical notion in society. Women consider breast cancer as a
nightmare, and they end up losing hope in the first phase of treatment. Losing hope is not going
to help those young women who are also unfortunate. Making a difference in someone's life
requires confidence and optimism (Axelsson, U. et al. 2018). When Socrates was talking about
argumentum ad ignoratium, he spoke of people who wish to show others the right way, yet they
are stuck in the same problem. Anyone who wants to make changes in others' lives must help
himself first. Indeed, women with breast cancer do not know the amount of time left for them on
earth, but it is essential to living your days by choosing love over fear.
Women plight raises breast cancer awareness. Whatever we post on social media and all
that we share with others will affect their way of thought. Women can make a difference in the
lives of others by sharing the knowledge of prevention strategies. These women would have
helped many people who require this knowledge. When women with breast cancer share their
experience with others, other women get inspired and ensure that they never fail to get cancer
examination. A person speaking out of the experience will capture the attention of many people.
These simple attentions are what results in changes (Axelsson, U. et al. 2018). No one wants to
die of cancer, and these supports are what many people need. It does not mean that because you
were never supported, so you cannot help others, in times of breast cancer disease, everyone
should be selfless.

If women who are suffering from breast cancer assist other women with ways in which
they could detect the early warnings of cancer disease, then they would make a difference in the
lives of many. The world has also accommodated the lower class, these people are impoverished,
and the majority of them are illiterate. All they need is education concerning breast cancer
(Padin, A. C. et al. 2019). When these people can detect early warnings of cancer disease, they
could get medical help before the condition becomes severe. The earlier they know about this,
the better. Women with breast cancer can change the world. It is vital to encourage others. The
motivation within people is what makes them live longer. When HIV/AIDS was first considered
as a global health issue, many people became fearful, and at the same time, several people had
acquired the virus. Today, no one speaks about HIV/AIDS; all that people discuss is breast
cancer in women. People are surviving and living longer lives with the disease. I believe that if
women with breast cancer would help in motivating other women, they will not experience the
fear that kills us internally.
Breast cancer is associated with several risk factors. Gene mutation, environmental
factors, and personal history could lead to the condition. Women with breast cancer could make
a difference in the lives of others by creating awareness that educates women on how to handle
situations. Environmental factors cannot be compared to personal history or family history. We
understand carcinogens and how they lead to cancer. Women who experienced childhood abuse
are likely to give up in life (Padin, A. C. et al. 2019).
It is we humans who have polluted our environment by exposing it to dangerous gases
and chemicals, not knowing that these poisonous substances also affect us. We are responsible
for what we experience. Imagine a world with no litters, no toxic gases, wastes, and chemicals; if
the world would be clean, then we could prevent this disease to some extent. Mother Teresa once

BREAST CANCER IN WOMEN

6

said. "If everyone could clean his doorstep, then the whole world would be clean." I believe that
we should not wait to learn lessons from the others; we should be cautious and ensure that we
take the necessary precautions (Padin, A. C. et al. 2019).
Women with breast cancer should advise other women always to value their lives. Life is
a gift which should be nurtured at all cost. Women should handle their lives with immense
seriousness. We all have the purpose of living. In the case of adversity, one person can make a
difference. Some have survived with the disease for more than ten years, who are you to lose
hope in your first year? These women have a significant responsibility to society (Cheng, H. et
al. 2016). Women should appreciate their bravery and learn from them. Some situations hurt
more than the disease. A case in which a couple has to separate because the woman was
diagnozed with cancer is not appreciated. As far as we need tips from these people, they also
require our help. As people make every decision in their lives, they should also remember that
stigma should not have any place in society.
Women with breast cancer have a comprehensive view of the causes of the disease. If one
confesses that he was a victim of an unhealthy lifestyle, I feel that others should abstain from
these unhealthy lifestyles to achieve good health. If these women would educate us on how
positive attitudes that they have developed and survived with the disease, that would have a
significant impact on the lives of many. It is evident that many people do not open up; they fear
people talking behind their backs, but this should not be a problem (Cheng, H. et al. 2016). All
we need to know that what does not kill you makes you stronger forget about their tantrums and
move on with life. These women could also alert the others that the disease does not consider a
specific ethnic group. Many have always based their notions that a particular illness is for a
specific race. The women could assist other women by showing them that primitiveness should

BREAST CANCER IN WOMEN

7

be avoided. There are times that people need to stop all non-essential claims and work towards
healthy lives.
Creating awareness is essential, and that is what women with breast cancer should
support us as they give the best tips on how to handle situations concerning the disease. We all
know that breast cancer does not select a minority over a majority that means that no one is
exempted from the condition. Handling each situation with courage will promote women
empowerment in society (Cheng, H. et al. 2016). Confidence when handling news of breast
cancer is vital. Sometimes the doctors give us news on adversities that we can never handle, but
what could be done? Some women have died earlier than expected due to breast cancer infection,
and it sounds terrible.
These women have always helped others to think of their loved ones before making
decisions in their lives. Building confidence and letting the disease be will still make many
women live longer. Whatever you say to the general public will help them not to make that
similar mistake you made. Being open about your disease is essential; it does not mean that you
are careless. If everyone were irresponsible, there would be no need for blaming gene inheritance
as a cause of breast cancer (Cheng, H. et al. 2016).
When a person who is already suffering from breast cancer talks to the public about diet
precautions, who are you to deny? If we have been told to quit smoking, unhealthy foods, and
other risk factors that could promote breast cancer, then that should be done without any
questions. It looks like actions speak louder than words. When we take action and welcome good
behaviors, then everything will be okay (Axelsson, U. et al. 2018). Let everyone learn to keep
the environment free from germs. These women have changed their diets because of the disease.

BREAST CANCER IN WOMEN

8

Women who have not yet been infected should also try as much as they can to welcome
healthy lifestyles. As far as breast cancer is concerned, everybody needs to acquire knowledge of
the disease. People are usually oblivious and only become serious once infected. Humans should
not wait until they are infected to take precautions. Prevention is better than cure, and everyone
knows that there is no cure for breast cancer, so the only thing that we can do is to live lives that
reduce the exposure to risk factors. It is upon everyone to learn from women battling breast
cancer. Let them feel their pain and know that breast cancer is not just a common disease
(Cheng, H. et al. 2016).
Many of them claim that people with no support or optimism die young. Battling with
cancer disease is daunting as it begins from the therapies which are quite expensive and timeconsuming. A person who is suffering from cancer despite not genetically inherited could still
survive and help others survive too despite the drawbacks they face. Strength is essential in every
woman battling cancer. It is through faith that one has to develop the will to live (Devi, M. K. et
al. 2019). Never sacrifice your ambitions for anyone. Do not let the disease control you; instead,
you can control the disease.
Everyone believes that no woman would wish to suffer from breast cancer. Human
beings require healthy lives as well as longer lives. Some people give up very quickly. Some of
the women who were diagnozed with breast cancer had lost hope and died. On the other hand,
there are a few women who have remained stable and are willing to do anything to stay alive.
Only women with emotional resilience can live longer because they adopt mechanisms that help
them recover from these harsh adversities (D’egidio, V. et al. 2017). Emotionally stronger
women can survive when facing adversity. Those who cannot handle stress and depression are
less resilient. They give in soon enough without thinking twice.
