Introduction

The exploitation of countries within Africa during the period they were colonized is an
interesting aspect to study. The continent of Africa located, between Europe as well as the
anticipated resources of the East, turned out to be the target of many European explorers in the
15th century (Lovejoy, 2019). West African coast was initially explored by the Portuguese. After
which, other European sea explorers followed. The arrival of the European explorers led to the
establishment of trade in the West of Africa. At the start, they traded items such as pepper, gold,
and more, though the organization of colonies in the United States in the 16th century enhanced
the needs for slaves, who quickly turned to be main export from countries located at the West
African Coast region. Due to the emergence of slavery in Africa, it is important to look at how it
impacted the Ivory Coast.
Date and Duration Slavery Lasted
Ivory Coast, similar to other West African countries, experienced the effects of the arrival
of colonialists. However, the nonappearance of sheltered docking points alongside its coastline
limited Europeans from creating a permanent trading post. Thus, seaborne business activity
became uneven and made the Europeans hardly penetrate the Ivory Coast. Despite Ivory Coast
