Compare and Contrast Speeches about the Cold War
Aftermath World War II, the world was in flux, and there was a political upheaval in
different countries across the globe. Mainly, Europe was politically unstable and economically
devastated. As a result, many countries in this region appeared to be controlled by the Soviet
Union. In their different speeches, Presidents Ronald Reagan, Harry S. Truman, and US
Secretary of State George C. Marshall outlines their policies to undermine the influences of the
Soviet Union across Europe and the entire globe at large. They wanted to reduce the dominance
of the Soviet Union in the world. Their remedies to the problem had significant similarities and a
few differences.
During his term in office, President Harry Truman confronted various challenges in
international affairs. When the United Kingdom could no longer afford to fight insurgencies by
communists in Turkey and Greece, it notified the United States, as a result, in his Truman
Doctrine, the resident issued a promise to offer the necessary support to contain communism. In
his speech, his policy was to support economically and through political processes, any nation
that resisted communism. He says,” I believe that it must be the policy of the United States to
support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside
pressures”(Voices of the American people, p. 205). He believed that by offering financial aid,
different countries would gain their economic and political stability. He also provided military
support to countries that were under the threat of the Soviet Union.
The US Secretary of State George Marshall also offered notable remedies to the
European nations. Unlike President Truman, Marshall offered a policy to fill the power vacancy
in Europe and the reconstructio...
