The Role of the Media in Reinforcing 'Institutional Racism
Introduction
Institutional racism, also referred to as systematic racism, is when the practices of the
political and social institutions are aimed to reflect racism. This type of practice is displayed
in imagery, such as the gap in criminal justice, employment, education, wealth, political
power, and wealth between different races (Brennan, 2017). The term was first identifiable in
the works of Stokely Carmichael and Charles V. Hamilton. In their book Black Power: The
Politics of Liberation, they state that individual racism is highly noticeable, while institutional
racism is on the operation of the system. The media, for a while, has also played a part in
institutional racism.
Media and Institutional Racism
The media controls the opinion of the general public, and it directly or indirectly
controls the public's perception of the people around them. The term media is a derivation of
the word media, meaning a mode or carrier. The media intend to address any group or target
audience. Media includes print, television, radio, film and the internet (Edwards, 2018). It is
evident press was created to simplify transparency, and its mandated role is democracy.
Media shapes public opinion it creates perceptions and views; it is the tool for change. The
purpose of media on issues, including race, is highly faced in many ways. The media for the
longest has reinforced institutional racism.
Institutional racism is not a direct form of racism. It instead exists in the patterns and
habits of life in the process of how many significant social, political, and economic events
play a role in the media. It is, in fact, a role that has been normalized in many ways by
respective fields in media (Edwards, 2018). The media is not always accountable even if its
purpose is identifiable in many forms. The interpretation is felt different in the process. It is
the watchdog and decision-maker.
