a. What is essential (in the practices and beliefs) for a tradition to be called a religion?
What makes traditions qualify to be termed as religion has been a controversial subject
among scholars. However, philosophers have agreed on the different elements that a tradition
must possess to qualify to be a religion. For one, the tradition must be sacred. It means that the
tradition should have a particular object, person, language, architecture, or clothing that is
distinct, divine, and stand out of the rest. For example, Christianity has a divine cosmic
individual. God is in this religion is considered as a cosmic person, and a divine being who is not
only compassionate and just but also possess infinite virtues and intelligence. Similarly, in Islam,
Allah is considered a divine being and a cosmic individual. The fact that the two have sacred
beings made them religions.
Secondly, the tradition’s beliefs should be ritualized in that it must be made real and enacted
through ceremonies. All the existing religions have beliefs that are enacted through ceremonies.
