Description
part 1
Option #1: Work in Modern America
For this Portfolio Project, you will write a paper showing your understanding of work in modern America. Included in this paper must be an analysis of positive and negative aspects of our relatively new service/knowledge based economy and our place in the global economy. You must also critically analyze the interconnectedness of immigration, globalization, democracy, and corporate power. You must use evidence from your textbook and cite all three films (found in Module 7 and Module 8).
This week you will submit an outline and your reference page. You will turn in this assignment for a grade, and then you will use your work and any feedback to shape your final Portfolio Project.
See the Portfolio Milestone Rubric in the Module 5 Folder for more details
PART 2
Option #1: Work in Modern America

Included in this paper must be an analysis of positive and negative aspects of our relatively new service/knowledge based economy and our place in the global economy. You must also critically analyze the interconnectedness of immigration, globalization, democracy, and corporate power.
Use evidence from Module 7 and Module 8, which include the following:
- The High Cost of Low Prices highlights the corporate practices and low price of Wal-Mart and how this impacts America and the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXmnBbUjsPs
- This is What Democracy Looks Like covers the protest at the World Economic Forum meeting of September 11, 2000, in Melbourne, Australia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruf1iBgdujs
You Portfolio Project should meet the following requirements:

Review the Portfolio Project grading rubric, which can be accessed from the Module 8 folder.
Reach out to your instructor at any point in the course if you have any questions about the assignment.

Work in Modern America
There is increased exploitation of employees through the growth in corporate powers
even with better economic status in relation to their labor and the salaries they earn. The modern
American society has many industries that host different occupations and professions in their
workforce. There is a long history of work, which has continually evolved to get to the extent of
a service based economy (Hodson & Sullivan, 2012). In the improved economy, there is an
increase in the knowledge and expertise compared to products and materials that are
manufactured. Also, the knowledge-based economy is related to a high number of both strengths

Conversely, there is over-reliance in the third world countries with most of production
and manufacturing work being done by them. The reliance on other economies has changed the
status of the workforce leading to the increase in the power of employment companies and
corporations. Therefore, the definition of work and quality of employment has significantly been
affected. This paper will hence analyze the pros and cons of the economy in modern America,
the place of United States globally and the connection between globalization, democracy,
immigration and corporate power.
Positive and Negative Aspect of the New Service Knowledge-Based Economy
The positive dimensions of the new service-based economy are related to the fact that

economy since most of the farm work was left to them thus maintaining the agricultural
landscape (Peri, 2010). They also were useful in raising the wages of Americans by about 6%.
They are found to bring different complementary skills and fill the demand for jobs (Hodson &

Sullivan, 2012). On the other hand, in the service based economy, there was an increase in the
availability of labor due to a large number of immigrants in America. They are employed in the
manual and low-skilled jobs which otherwise could not be filled if the immigrants were not
there.
Alternatively, the service based economy has its negative side that drags it backward.
