Description

Subject of the paper: Race/Labor relation in organized baseball

Requirement: Write a critical, expository paper and a sociological analysis of race or labor relations in organized baseball. In your paper apply and critically evaluate the ideas of Gordon or Lipsky to one of these issues.

Here are some reminders. In your paper, as with the first assignment, please outline and discuss some relevant ideas of the writer or writers and show how they apply to some aspect of the baseball issue that you choose. You may use the questions in the class exercise or questions like them to help you construct your essay. (Please refer to the guidelines on writing critical expository papers as well.)

Other information: Some reminders: In your opening paragraph, you will need to write a thesis that states whether the writer’s ideas mainly help us or do not help us to understand or explain a specific issue in baseball and precisely the ways in which the ideas do and do not help us to understand the issue. You will need to address directly the sociological ideas you are using, show that you understand them, and cite themspecifically. You will also need to supply baseball-related evidence for or against these ideas from the texts, including direct quotes, from the historical writings assigned in class (Rader, James, Tygiel, or Korr). These writings also require citations. In addition, you may also supply evidence from films and lecture.

As with the previous assignment, you should include a counterpoint. If you are arguing, for instance, that Gordon’s ideas mainly help us understand race relations in baseball, you should also indicate an instance where they do not. If you are arguing that Lipsky’s ideas about protest mainly do not explain labor relations in baseball, for instance, you should indicate an instance where they do.

Labor Relations

The baseball players have organized an association that participates in collective
bargaining of the team members and helps them to raise their issues. The basic agreement
between baseball players’ association and baseball league describes the rules of employment and
the financial structure of the game. Players and their league employers have been on the
crossheads regarding some of the terms of employment. Therefore, raising some concerns from
the employee and creating a misunderstanding between the two representatives improves labor
relations. Employees are bound to remain in an organization if their issues are addressed, and the
agreements are honored. Various arguments are presented by the writer, which are applicable in
the aspect of labor relations of baseball (Nichol, 2016). Therefore, the arguments about protests
and collective bargaining agreements help in addressing the labor relations issues in baseball and
help in developing a better understanding of the issue.
The baseball players are known as icons and idols to millions of Americans. The players’
participation helps in the development of the national culture, and that calls for their recognition
since they play a key role in national heritage. According to Lipsky, (1968), he states that
baseball is a business that has union players working while big business owners share the profit
of their efforts without them getting a piece of share (Lipsky, 1968). There is great undermining
of the baseball players and the efforts they relentlessly put into the game. Various organizations
are established to play roles in raising issues related to players to participate in bargaining for
their welfare. Some of the concerns are never addressed and cause the welfare of the players to
deteriorate. Therefore, there is a need to make use of the recommended strategies by Lipsky to
demand an equivalent share to their efforts.

Lipsky, in his article, states that there has been frequent resort to protest activities that are
utilized by powerless groups. The protests represent an important aspect of minority groups and
low-income groups. The protest activities are a mode of political actions that are oriented
towards objection of one or more policies or condition...
