BP Oil Spill
Oil spills happen rarely, but once they do, their effects on the environment are felt for
decades. On 20th April 2010, an explosion occurred in the Gulf of Mexico oil rig that led to a
massive spill. A total of 3.19 million barrels of oil spilled and spread over the shorelines of
Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Texas. The spill became the largest in US history
and the history of the petroleum industry (Ha, 2019). Much damage was done to the marine
ecosystem as a large number of marine lives suffocated and died effectively causing an
imbalance in the environment and a decline in the tourism industry. The BP Company, on the
other hand, experienced huge losses not only from the spill.
Controlled burns were another method used to control the leakage. This method involved
