Labeling is among the various definitions of criminality in the study of crime, the
criminal justice system and criminal behavior. It is used to determine and influence self identity
and the behavior of people. Labeling does not consider why some social groups are more likely
to commit crime; instead, it determines why some individuals are labeled and why others are not.
In addition, it also determines the impacts of the labeling on the person and moulds the way the
person behaves (LaFave, 2006).
An offender who has been labeled a deviant ends up being associated more with the
dominant label as it is considered to be more significant than other traits of the individual. Each
label constitutes prejudices and perspectives which, leads to other individuals interpreting the
offender’s conduct in an exceptional way. Consider a case where an individual is convicted for
drug charges; many people in the society consider drug and substance abuse as harmful to health,
a violation of the law, and results into the individual into becoming unproductive in life. A 20
year old boy is busted abusing illegal drugs and becomes labeled a deviant when his social group
learns about it. As a result, he encounters limited opportunities in regards to social acceptance.
His parents also reinforce the deviant label by informing his school. This leads to teachers
