Correctional counselors complement police or peace officers in ensuring and maintaining
a safe environment within correctional facilities (Kratcoski, 2017). They work with inmates or
ex-convicts whereby they engage in making adjustments to correctional counseling or parole
program to ensure they reflect and meet the clients’ needs. Correctional counselors make
recommendations about the progress of inmates while under parole programs (Sun, 2008). They
coordinate and work together with other government agencies within the criminal justice system
to help inmates and ex-convicts transition well into society after serving their jail term.
Correctional counselors help clients (inmates and ex-convicts) to transition well in and out of the
correctional facilities. Therefore, a complex and sensitive relationship must exist between the
inmates and correctional counselors, and sometimes this relationship can be jeopardized by
various factors such as personal biases, dislikes, unprofessionalism, and differences in culture,
values, customs, beliefs and ethical issues. As a result, ethics and professionalism play a pivotal
role in promoting the purpose of correctional facilities within the criminal justice system.
