1. Why Do People Get Married? What Are The Advantages And What Are The
Disadvantages Of Marriage To Individuals And Society?
Marriage is a bond between two people, mostly referred to as partners who feel the need
to stay together and symbolize their love for each other for the rest of their lives. Love and
the yearning to have a stable and complete family set is one of the main reasons as to why
many people get married today (Knox, 2018). The conveniences that come with being with
someone to help in many issues of life are also a major reason as to why many people get
married (Knox, 2018). The fact that couples will help each other in things such as finances
and planning for a better future for the family is also a good enough reason as to why most
people get married. One of the main advantages of being in a marriage is the fact that as long
as the partners have a good understanding of each other the partners are less probable to be
stressed or depressed as compared to their single counterparts. Another advantage of being
married is the fact that marriage brings about a sense of responsibility hence making the
partners less likely to indulge in risky behavior such as the use of highly addictive substances
(Knox, 2018). This mainly happens as a result of an individual wanting to participate more in
the future of the family that they are trying to build. Despite the mentioned benefits of
marriage, there are also several disadvantages, such as: being married to someone means that
one loses their individuality, hence making it difficult for the person to have the same
freedoms that they did in the past (Knox, 2018). Marriage entails a lot of compromises
mainly based on the fact that both parties come from different backgrounds and have varying
personalities. If not carefully addressed, this disadvantage can cause a lot of arguments
between the partners.
