Running head: CRITICAL THINKING Critical Thinking: Recreational Marijuana Kevin Robbins PHI210 Professor Ericka Harden April 26, 2020 CRITICAL THINKING 2 Critical Thinking: Recreational Marijuana Introduction In this piece of literature, the topic of legalizing recreational marijuana is going to be tackled. This is a topic that has had a lot of implications when it comes to illegal drug trafficking, drug abuse as well as other issues related to marijuana. Some nations in the world have legalized this drug and it has been identified to have both advantages as well as disadvantages to the country and individuals. In this case, based on the “www.procon.org” website, there are three premises that I identified which are on the pros of legalizing recreational marijuana. The three rationales include boosting the economy by legalizing marijuana, reduction of marijuana use by teens as a result of legalizing it, and regulation of marijuana to promote customer safety (Procon, 2020). These three reasons directly contradict my position on the issue of legalizing recreational marijuana. When it comes to boosting the economy, the interesting thing about this rationale is how it generalizes the economic impact of the drug. In this case, I would say that the point fails to critically focus on other economic factors that might sprout out as a result of marijuana legalization. Such a factor, for example, is the suppression of the positive economic impact brought by other commodities such as tobacco. If I believed this point of view, I would not only put into consideration the growth of the marijuana industry but also the implications of this process in the drug market. While this idea might be accurate, it requires a lot of aspects to put into consideration. If proper regulations and policies are put for the manufacture and distribution of recreational marijuana, then this point may be true. Secondly, the laid-out pros of reduced marijuana use among teenagers has an interesting indication that teenagers might be abusing the drug just because it is illegal. If I was to agree with CRITICAL THINKING 3 this perspective, then it would mean that I would disregard the statistics of teenagers who abuse other legalized drugs such as alcohol and tobacco. This is one noticeable thing that would follow such a point of view. However, the point could be true when factors such as peer pressure, and teen social anxiety are brought into consideration Finally, the website points out the pro of customer safety as a result of the legalization of marijuana. Interestingly, this point does not consider that there is always a black market that disregards regulations laid out on particular commodities in the industry. In this case, the legalization of marijuana may bring regulations, and hence a black market will emerge to offer marijuana without such regulations. Therefore, seeing that the drug is addictive, it would be quite difficult to assure customer safety through regulation. If I were to look consider this point of view, it would be noticeable that regulation is a broad term that cannot guarantee customer safety. The point of view would, however, be true if the matter of a black market is scrapped off. Conclusion In conclusion, there will always be different arguments about whether or not marijuana for recreational purposes should be legalized. In all these arguments, the important thing to consider is the impact on society, the economy, as well as individuals. In the future, there should be agreements, innovative ideas, and open discussions on how the matter can convenience all parties in society. CRITICAL THINKING

Critical thinking: Recreational Marijuana
Introduction
Several theoretical understanding has been formulated to guide the legalization of
recreational marijuana, stating different concepts ranging from economic boost to reduction in
use by the teenagers (Yu et al., 2020). From the general view, the arguments for recreational
marijuana legalization presents some conceptual cases that consider not only the economic
perspective but also take into account the social debate. Although legalizing marijuana has been
a controversial topic of discussion that needs a critical analysis, most arguments have favoured
the legalization of marijuana in the United States, citing the beneficial use of cannabis
(Gardenier et al., 2017). Considering both sides of the coin from an evidence-based literature
point of view and the identified pros of legalizing recreational marijuana from the
“www.procon.org” website, which defines the legalization to be based on economic boost,
reduction consumption in teenagers and promotion of customer safety, my position would be
different in this. Although I support the legalization of both recreational and medicinal
marijuana, the basis of such legalization should be on social impact, individual and economic
implications. Therefore, the legalization debate of recreational marijuana should be anchored on
the impact the legalization will present to the social, individual and the economy at large.
The argument on the economic impact of the legalization of marijuana has been
presented by different researchers and scholars who see the economic value of marijuana
legalization. Procon (2020), through its pro 1 for marijuana legalization, projects that the United
States would receive $24 billion in revenue by 2025 from marijuana sale. Further, other sectors
of government, such as tourism and transportation, would benefit massivel...
