Following the universal declaration of human rights, there have been several
controversies regarding this universality. Most of the critics of the idea that human rights are
universal argue that these rights express western values, norms, and more. This standpoint has
led to a vigorous debate about the notion that even though human rights are said to be globally
binding, they have a western origin, and amendment on them comes from the West. Others claim
that human rights are European Judeo-Christian and Enlightenment heritage. In this case, Wright
(2014) argues that other cultures would not be able to enjoy universal human rights, especially if
they do not subscribe to Western cultures and norms. African countries may not be affected
much by these controversies because they have cultural affiliations to the West. Middle and the
Far East are areas in which friction is higher because they immensely vary from the West in
terms of religion, culture, and several other aspects of life in which human rights play a
significant role. In this regard, most of the problems associated with international human rights
come from the western powers.
One of the most crucial elements of human rights is that they develop from history. These
rights have close correlations with specific social, economic, and political situations. They are
also linked to specific histories, cultures, and values of communities in particular countries
(Wright 2014). Therefore, every historical development has unique requirements for human
rights. Similarly, countries with different historical developments, different traditions, and
cultures would have other practices regarding human rights. Therefore, thinking that human
rights can be standardized globally based on the model of some countries will raise challenges
that will evoke rejection. Historically, there has been a distinction between the East and the
