Power and leadership impacts a team’s performance. This exercise, based on the pointers,
involves critically analyzing MediSys Corp’s case study, using the leadership theories and power
and politics theories.

Who holds what leadership responsibilities in the team? What are the significant issues
with the team leader in this team?

a) Trait theory
Trait theory stipulates that particular traits and qualities that make an individual a better
leader (Derue, 2011). Art Beaumont is the president of MediSys Corp’s he is in charge of the
team. The fact that he is aggressive is a trait that makes him a good leader whose key
responsibilities to aid the project not only achieve its full potential but also gain a competitive
advantage over its competitors. Valarie Merz, the marketing manager, is also aggressive a trait
that makes her a good leader in marketing. Lastly, Karen Baio, who was appointed to be in
charge of the regulatory system, is patient and persistence qualities that make her excel in her
job.
Contingency/ situational theory
This theory stipulates that leaders, after weighing all the approaches, usually go with the best
action (Nawaz & Khan, 2016; Module 6, n.d). In this case study, Beaumont saw the need for a
new customized system of leadership, and he introduced the parallel system. He also encouraged
the contribution and participation of all the executives in all the stages of the project, and it is
style termed as democratic leadership.
