Fractured Identity in Toni Morrison’s Beloved.
Self-identity is normally established at a very young age in the cycle of development for
human beings. Though identity seems safe from any external threat, it can be altered or entirely
changed by a series of events. Set in a period surrounding the Civil War, Beloved by a true story
of Margaret Garner, whose story resembles that of the protagonist, Sethe. The novel is also set a
time when the Fugitive Slave Act had been enacted and slave owners were allowed to reclaim
former slaves who had escaped their grasp. The inhumane treatment of slaves during this time
led to the belief of dehumanization of themselves, and the eventual loss and fracture of their
identity. Slavery and repression subjected African Americans to animalistic and harsh treatment
which had a huge impact on their sense of identity. In her article “The Loss of Identity Through
Abuse in Toni Morrison’s Beloved,” Wood asserts that, “Identity can be destroyed and built back
up through the ways that others treat us” (2). The theme of loss of identity is dominant in
Morrison’s novel. Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved, presents a fractured identity through the
narrative style adopted throughout the course of the story, and the hopelessness and fear caused
by slavery.
The narrative style employed in the novel acts as the first cue to the loss of Sethe’s sense
of self and the return of the memories she repressed. Through the novel, the author attempts to
seamlessly switch between the present and the past in a manner that is both uncanny and
