by Sydney ArmstrongProfessor Hassanlou and Peers,                Big data is large amounts of information that cannot be monitored and processed with basic systems. “Big data is so voluminous that conventional computing methods are not able to efficiently process and manage it.” (Bidgoli, 2018, pg. 63).    The three dimensions of big data are volume, variety, and velocity.  Volume is the total amount of data, for example the number of pictures posted on Facebook over a specific period of time. Variety refers to the different types of data.  “Variety- this refers to the combination of structured data (e.g., customers’ product rating between 1 and 5) and unstructured data (e.g., call center conversations of customer complaints about a service or product).” (Bidgoli, 2018, pg. 64).  Velocity is the rate of speed for data and information to be processed that comes in.  An example of velocity is the speed that Facebook posts and Tweets are generated by the social media websites that must be processed.                If companies focused solely on the quantitative aspects of big data, they could miss other crucial pieces of information that could limit, or minimize, their success.  Having the ability to market and tailor goods or services to customers cannot be done with only looking at structured data.  Understanding where the business can improve by reading, or listening, to customer complaints cannot be done solely looking at numbers.  Also, a company can purchase an application to filter through various Facebook posts and Tweets to see how many people are talking about their product or service and what they have to say about it. The speed in which they can relate the previous search with the next offer they are going to make this is called velocity. Some companies use cookies that are small files that storage your information for futures researches or log in.If a company focus solely on the quantitative aspect of big data it would be missing a important and essential part of the data that brings you the details and the depth to understand their full implications the qualitative part.
