Communication
For this assignment, I chose the movie The Grumpy Old Men. The movie was released in
1993 and can be categorized as a romantic comedy movie. It involves two retirees one is called
John Gustafson and the other Max Goldman. These retirees live next door to one another and
engage in feuding activities almost all the time. As they are living alone in their houses, these old
men spend most of their time fishing and pulling jokes on one another.
Throughout the movie, we find the relationship between John and Max to be unique. At
their elderly age, the two friends are for most of the time, in contempt with each other. Their
relationship, if not understood from the beginning of the movie, could be translated as that of two
enemies. Their relationship before their rivalry was one of two regular friends, however, due to
their old age, there isn’t anything much that they could do. However, when they both fall become
attracted to the same woman. When John wins the heart of the lady Ariel, Max is furious that he
lost, and becomes jealous of John. From this time, the relationship between John and Max
becomes that of a feud and pulling cruel practical jokes on each other. They both become
grumpy in all their activities affecting even the relationship with their kin.
Major principles
From the movie, we find that communication between Max and John to be that of
contempt and one that lacks trust. The communication between these old men is one that goes
against the principles of communication of trust. Even when John’s wife invited Max for
thanksgiving in his house, Max refuses and instead lies that he already has other plans. Instead of
Max joining his neighbors in celebrating thanksgiving, he instead opts to spend the time alone in
his house, which highlights that their relationship does not constitute a trust.

Communication should be based on understanding. However, the communication
between Max and his friend John seems to lack in understanding. When Max unintentionally
assumes that John has had romantic feelings with Max’s crush, he becomes irrational and does
not want to hear any explanation from John. Even when John swears that he has not done
anything wrong, Max continues to overreact and does not want to understand or hear John’s side
of the story.
Communication should be based on the principle of appropriate language. During the
movie, we find that John and Max use a highly d...
