Advancement in technology and increased access to mobile technology continues to
increase the number of online activities (Vorderer et al. 2016). Social media is turning out to be
one of the most significant online events. Social media has both positive and negative effects on
users’ daily lives. Previous studies on the impact of social media have focused on its impact on
students and youths. The present research concentrates on the effects of social media use on
general population groups throughout their daily lives. Many people spend significant time on
social media. A study by Mihailidis (2013) showed that after text messaging, social media
accounted for 95% of mobile technology use among individuals. Individuals log into social
networking apps more often compared to other functions on their mobile devices and do so
several times within a day.
Social media provides users with several benefits. Quinn and Oldmeadow (2013)
compared emotions of belonging to friendship groups between users and non-users of social
media users. The results of the study indicated that social media users had a significantly higher
level of feelings of belonging relative to non-social media users. The regularity of using social
media partially mediated the relationships between the sense of belonging and social media use,
