CMNS 122 – Professional Writing II M. Saad – S20 Annotated References for Critical Analysis Due: May 14, 2020 by 11:55PM on Moodle OBJECTIVE For the Annotated References exercise, you will conduct the research necessary to write your short report assignment. You will research and find three credible sources that relate to the theme or topic of interest you have identified (in addition to your topic source from the article list on Moodle). You will then produce an annotated references list based on this research. The purpose of any annotated references list is to give an account of research that has been completed on a project. Unlike a reference page or simple bibliography, an annotated reference list not only gives reference information for a given source but also provides a brief summary of the source you are annotating. When engaging in a research project, an annotated reference list can be a valuable tool, reminding you of the contents of each of the sources you have read and how they can be useful in the final draft of your report. You will include a total of four sources on the references list: one of the sources from the article list on Moodle and three additional sources you will find yourself. For each source, you are to write a very brief (two paragraphs max for each source) outlining the source and its relevance to your short report, including: 1. Evaluation of the credibility of the source (1-2 sentences max.) 2. Summary of the source that identifies the author’s central claim in your own words. (approx.. 2 sentences) 3. Explanation of how the source relates to your research topic. (approx.. 2 sentences) Some questions to consider: How is this source relevant to my topic? How does it fit with my other sources? How do I plan to use this source in my paper? You need not complete a full in-depth description normally included in a full annotated bibliography. It is also expected that you will include correct and complete APA reference information for each source you use in this list. CMNS 122 – Professional Writing II Short Report Annotated Bibliography Annotated Bibliography Dean, D., & Webb, C. (2011, January). Organizational practice recovering form information overload . McKinsey Quarterly. Both authors have extensive background in organizational behavior. The article explains that for years most companies are hampering their productivity by multi-tasking and overloading executives with constant meetings and barrages of emails that expect instant responses. The article goes on to suggest different ways of reorganizing the way executives do day to day tasks to become more productive. I will be using information from this article to show that by re arranging and delegating tasks executives can get better productivity. Lee , S. B., Lee, S. C., & Suh, Y. H. (2016). Technostress from mobile communication and it's impact on quality of life and productivity. Total Quality Managment & Business Excellence, 775-790. All the authors are business faculty members of various Korean universities. The study conducted investigates how being plugged in to our phones 24/7 can cause stress. This stress comes in many ways one being answering emails and phone calls while on personal time. When one gets stressed from doing work on personal time it can lead to productivity decrease at work. An interesting finding in this study is that it found answering the occasional email or phone call while on personal time can keep an employee feeling like part of the team rather than being isolated. I will be using this article to show aspects of being connected can still have benefit to one’s productivity. Peter Stroh, D., & Paul, M. (2013). Is Moving Too Fast Slowing You Down? How to Prevent Overload from Undermining Your Organiztion's Performance. Reflections, 13(1), pp. 14-27. David Peter Stroh is an MIT graduate with multiple degrees plus 30 years’ experience in organizational strategy. Marilyn Paul has a Ph.D. in organizational management and many years as a consultant in organizational behavior. This article explains that the can-do system of management where managers are plugged in 24/7 is less productive than a results and renewal system. I will be tying in how the renewal system has similar characteristics and results as the suggestions made by Dean & Webb Richtel, M. (2010, August 16). Outdoors and out of reach, studying the brain. New York Times. Matt Richtel is a Journalist for the New York Times who won a Pulitzer prize in 2010 for national reporting his specialty is writing about technology and its impact. In this news article he follows 5 neuroscientists on a weeks’ vacation totally unplugged from the outside world. In this week off the scientists come to conclusions that walking in the woods can recalibrate the way our brains think. The scientists also talk about how even when individuals anticipate receiving emails they clog up some working memory in the brain with this anticipation. I will be using examples from this article to suggest that people need more down time to reenergize the brain to become more productive.
