Description

Please answer one of the following questions in an essay of 2-3 pages.

1) How does the news media promote the activity of communication in terms of conveying and spreading news, ideas and information, and how does the news media reflect the interplay of technology and institutions? What is the role of news media in promoting institutions such as “democracy” and the public sphere, and what are some of the contradictions inherent in the news media being both a culture industry and a profit-seeking business with enormous power and control over the diffusion of news and information?2) In what ways does human mobility become an alluring focus for institutions such as the state, law enforcement, and the business firm to monitor, and how do the pathways we travel -- physically as well as virtually -- emerge as targets of surveillance? How does the interplay of “structure and agency” describe our relationship to business firms that dominate the system of “surveillance capitalism?” How does this system undermine certain individual rights considered fundamental and institutionalized in law? Is there a difference between a billboard imploring us to consume a certain product, and a message that pops up in our phone when we are shopping in a store suggesting that the next aisle has a product we might want? 3) In what ways can we speak of disease as a communication issue in the way we have conceived of communication? How do historical representations of epidemics reflect ideas about disease as a communicable phenomenon, and how does disease, as a communicable phenomenon, evolve into an institutional concern of government and the state? How does this evolution, in turn, enhance the power of government and the institution of the state? In what ways do historical observations about disease anticipate themes from our own world of COVID-19, and how do historical patterns about race and disease reappear today?
