ORGANIZATIONAL BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION
Communication is a two-way process of achieving a mutual understanding that enables
the participants to exchange feelings, news, information and ideas as well as creating and sharing
meaning. It is through communication that people and places are brought together (Rayudu,
2010). In any business enterprise or an organization, communication plays a key role in
management. Therefore, it will be difficult for an organization or business to operate in the
absence of communication between departments, senior and subordinate staff and among
employees. Despite the critical functions of communication, there are several organizational
barriers to effective communication facing many organizations. Some of these obstacles are

Negative organizational environment
The emotions of individuals at the workplace have a significant impact in determining
how information is communicated and understood. In the case of negative emotions in particular
among the top management, then effective communication will not be attained. The managers or
supervisors who have a negative outlook on almost everything will discourage communication
initiative among the employees. Also, we have some managers who do not bother to
communicate with employees on matters concerning the organization. As a result, the employees
will assume that communication is not wanted at the workplace and will remain silent
(Shrivastava, 2012).
