Stanford Prison Experiment
Introduction
The Stanford Prison Experiment explores the impacts that befall one when he/she
becomes a correctional officer or a prisoner. The study focuses on how situational variables may
impact the behavior of individuals in a particular setting. In this case, a prison environment. It is
among the most famous experiments on the psychology of inmates and legal authorities. Before
this, several other psychologists had conducted studies on the impacts of situational variables.
Thus, it seems like an expansion of works of great psychologists like Stanly Milgram, among
others. In this case, Zimbardo uses a simulated prison to conduct this experiment (Zimbardo,
2007). Good people are enrolled for the experiment to take different roles: either as prisoners or
security personnel. However, the planned duration the research is supposed to take place does
not even come to an end because the participants develop inhumane behaviors due to forces like
group pressure, misuse of power, and inadequate surveillance. The concept of dehumanization is
also brought out through the poor use of power by the prison guards. It is a reflection of what
takes place in some jails in the world. There is a slight reflection of the prison setting, such as
those of Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib.
Critical Elements of the System
In identifying the social power of groups, the Stanford Prison Experiment has used
several combined elements that lead to the influences experienced by the inmates and
correctional officers. Some of the elements are found in the prison code that most systems
employ even up to the moment. The first element that is identifiable ...
