Assignment 2 – Informational Speech Length: 5 to 10 minutes in length, note to be about one page (200 to 300 words) Due Dates: 1. Research, compose the notes for your speech, with a brief bibliography; post these on Black board by Thursday of Week 3 2. Read the assignment sheet for this week and participate in the discussion board based on the prompts. This week's part of the assignment is to post your notes and bibliography of the speech on this week's discussion board. The grade you receive on the discussion board is the grade you receive for this part of the assignment. What: Write an informational speech about at topic of interest to you. This speech delivered outside of class. You may deliver the speech at work, to your classmates, somewhere where you volunteer, as a speaker, etc. Do not read the speech. This is not a narrative. I expect you to give an extemporaneous speech to an organization or any group of people outside of class. Why: The purpose of this assignment is to provide you the opportunity to give a speech in front of a live audience and receive feedback from that audience. This allows you to practice speaking professionally without prompts other than your notes. How: 1. Decide on a topic and a group of people to whom you will deliver the speech. It can be a presentation required as part of your work. However, you cannot use Power Points. 2. Research the topic and create a brief bibliography using APA standards (For those of you unfamiliar with APA standards, there is a link in the syllabus). Create a page of notes, and cite your research. Generally, APA in text references will look like (Author(s), Year) within the text. The notes can be in bullet form, or sentences. Do not write a narrative (i.e. something you will read); the notes remind you what to say in an extemporaneous speech. 3. As usual, keep the speech light. Add personal points and humor. 4. Write or copy the notes and bibliography on the discussion board, and make sure to review it at least once before submitting. 5. Then you will have the opportunity to react to other student’s notes, both to get to know them, and interact with them in a public and professional speaking forum. Page 1
