Tocqueville’s work mainly revolves around equality in society. He recognizes that in the
United States several social forces come to play when it comes to the freedom of its citizens.
Tocqueville analyzes democracy as an equation that results in equality and liberty for the people
in the United States. Tocqueville explains that religion is one of the key elements that
contributed to the democracy found in the United States. According to him the vibrant religious
life in the United States is essential to the preservation of a free democratic society. He noted that
most religious communities in the United States were allowed to practice at their own accord.
However, comparing to France in the 19th century, which had a dominant religion of
Catholicism, it made most of the people who were deeply religious suspicious of democracy (De
Tocqueville, 2003, p 5).
Moreover, many devout French Catholics held the belief that their religion does not
support democracy, and for this reason, they were content with their aristocratic form of
