Crime is defined in by the federal and state laws as any behavior that is caused harm to an
individual or group of individuals. This harm can take various dimensions; physical harm,
psychological harm and even emotional harm. Therefore any given behavior that causes harm is
said to be a crime that is punishable in a court of law (Eck & Weisburd, 2015). In recent times
crime has become so rampant in our society. We see crime issues hitting headlines on social
media and other platforms where we do get information from. Various types of crime do exist in
our society, and our focus in this paper is going to be, assault crime. An assault crime falls under
the umbrella of personal crimes; which are crime offenses against an individual/person (Bartol &
Bartol, 2014).
Personal crimes are criminal activities that cause either physical or mental harm to a
person. Therefore since assault falls under this umbrella, it is a type of crime that is done to a
person which causes physical harm. Assault is therefore defined to have taken place if there is an
unlawful physical attack or threat to attack. Assault crimes are divided further into two distinct
forms can be either aggravated assaults or simple assaults (Rosenfeld, 2014). The demarcation
between the two is that aggravated assault is an attack or attempted attack with a weapon. This
attack can result in an injury or no injury but either way so long as there was a weapon involved
it is an aggravated assault.
While simple assaults are attacks or attempted attack without a weapon. Although they do
result in minor injuries or no injury so long as there was no weapon, it is always considered to be
a minor injury. Simple assaults normally result in bruises or any physical injuries that can be
treatable within a short period of time. In the US the two forms of assault have always taken
place, national statistics has been conducted to determine how many have been victims of such
attacks and to what extent has that criminal vice spread over the US population. Recent studies
