Introduction
Programming is an important occupation. It is the way of giving technology
instructions on what they should be doing and what to do next. Codes are used to solve
problems and perform tasks. There are many questions in this world that need to be
answered. I want to pursue programming because, through it, I can make a difference
worldwide by solving the problems of today and tomorrow. However, there are seven
health dimensions to keep in mind while pursuing this occupation. The health
dimensions to watch for are physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, occupational,
interpersonal, and environmental. Although each health dimension comes with many
challenges, to be a successful programmer, I have to stay healthy within all seven
health dimensions.
Physical
As a software programmer, sitting for long periods of time is an understood part
of the job because developing software is a time-consuming task. Some of the negative
effects include back pain, neck sprains; and in some extreme cases, numb legs.
Standing in an upright position helps relieve pain. There is less stress on the spine and
it improves blood circulation (Shahzeb, 2019). For me, standing does improve my
attention span because I do not get as tired as I do when I am sitting down.
Staying physically active as a programmer is very challenging. Coding during a
normal workday confines a programmer to a desk for hours. A study of seven software
engineers, who wore accelerometers, showed that the physical activity ranged from 30450 minutes per day, while their sedentary behavior varied between 6-15 hours (Cole,
2015). The best way to combat this is to simply exercise regularly. For me to maintain

regular and consistent exercise, I have to organize my time. If I can set schedules for
myself, there can be no excuse for sedentary behavior.
When an individual gets enough rest, it can aid in the protection of one’s mental
health, physical health, and quality of life. Unfortunately, many programmers or software
engineers develop insomnia or have trouble sleeping. This is most likely due to the fact
that “job-related stress is considered extremely high,” according to a study done by Sara
Zadeh and Khyrunnisa Begum (Zadeh, 2011). These long hours of work and stresses
that come with problem-solving play a big role in the development of insomnia amongst
programmers. Lifestyle management programs that include sleep hygiene and care
need to be integrated into policy within the IT community (Page, 2010). To ensure that I
receive enough rest, I would, again, implement some sort of time management chart or
journal. Organizing my time can be very effective in preventing the loss of sleep,
therefore, not allowing me to succumb to the development of insomnia.
Intellectual
This health dimension focuses on critical thinking, learning, and decision making.
Just like reading, writing, and arithmetic, programming is a basic human skill. However,
when a programmer is unable to develop the ability to solve problems for themselves,
he or she will never succeed (Bulks, 2019). It is no question that a successful
programmer is confident in their own ability. It is entirely up to the programmer to find
the information and assistance that is needed to learn what is important. Furthermore,
impatience, coming from the programmer, about learning and ex...
